MEDICAID ELIGIBILITY
Four requirements to be eligible for Medicaid
Medical necessity - – to achieve eligibility for the Medicaid nursing home program, the applicant must have a medical need for licensed nursing care and meet the risk assessment criteria for nursing home placement.
Age and citizenship - to achieve this Medicaid eligibility a person must be 65 years of age, blind or disabled, and be a U.S. citizen.
Income eligibility - The monthly income limit for a single applicant in the State of Texas is $2,829. Calculated annually, applicants must earn less than $33,948. If the applicant’s monthly income exceeds the cap amount, then a Miller's Trust (Qualified Income Trust) can be an avenue to eliminate this problem.
Asset eligibility – Divorced, widowed or otherwise single applicants are allowed “countable assets” valued up to $2,000. If both spouses are entering a nursing home, the asset cap is $3,000. There are many exceptions to these asset limitations. Let us help you develop a strategy.
